My mission for myself and the blog this year are very simple, MORE and BETTER! Please read on for a bit more detail…
Last year was a huge year in my life. Julie and I bought a new house and got married! It was fantastic! But yikes, it feels like a complete blur!
Some things sat on the back burner more than I would have liked in order achieve these big life goals. After the early Quivering Quads race (and the small injury that came with it) I did not run another race all year. This meant that I did not have the same motivation to keep exercising in the ways I have gotten used to in the last few years. I am sitting at a 5 year high weight right now and I know that I need to fix this. Staying stagnant can be so easy, but getting out and getting fit is always so much better and more rewarding. Further, I did not get out into the wilderness for as many camping and hiking trips as I would have liked to. Getting into the backcountry and breathing the fresh air is the key to better health for me, both mentally and phyisically. Also, if you are not doing the things you love in your life, then what are you doing exactly?
This year is going to be different! I have a much clearer schedule ahead of me and Julie has some great gear to take with us on some backpacking trips thanks to our wedding registry! I can’t wait to take her out to experience some of the joys that can come with camping a little deeper in the woods! I think she is excited about it too.
I am signed up and have started training for two races to start out the new year. February 22 brings the Castlewood Cup 15k Trail Run and March 9 brings my second try at the Quivering Quads Half Marathon Trail Run. I am hoping these two big races will help jumpstart my fitness into the new year. I am not planning on breaking any records, but they are going to be a springboard for a better me this year. Hopefully the course will be a bit less… creeky this year for Quivering Quads too!
Something else I would like to accomplish this year is getting my dog, Notch, trained well enough so that he can join me overnight on a few backpacking trips. He is a bundle of energy and would absolutely love a chance to spend some of it exploring the Missouri outdoors! We just need to make sure he is ready to stay with me at all times, as he has a tendency to lose focus from time to time.
And finally, a big goal for this year is to spend a bit more time with my photos and writing for this blog. I want to use this space as way to express myself better and a chance for people to see what it is I love so much about getting outside! That means more and better photos, and more in depth writing for each trip. I think that may mean I need to take better notes while we are out there. I have a tendency to forget the specifics of each trip a few minutes after I get back to work…
